Madagascar Petrified Wood
Selected and prepared for making tumbled stones in a rock tumbler.
This photo shows a two-pound sample of Madagascar Petrified Wood tumbling rough. The rocks were photographed wet to show their potential polished color. If you look closely, you can recognize evidence of wood grain in some of the pieces. Please click on the image for a larger view.
Adam Rittenhouse of our staff tumbled a couple batches of this rough, and here are some of his tumbled stones. We are very pleased with the color of the stones and their bright polished luster.

Many pieces of this rough show distinct evidence of wood grain. The color ranges from white to cream to tan, and from red to reddish brown to black. The pieces of rough range between about 1/2 inch to 2 inches in size. This size range works well in small tumblers such as the Thumler's MP-1, Thumler's A-R1, and Thumler's A-R2 rock tumblers.
We have tumbled this petrified wood several times with great results in rotary and vibratory tumblers. It has produced nicely shaped, colorful stones with a very bright polish. You can see wet pieces of rough (made wet to show potential polished color) and some stones that Adam Rittenhouse polished in the photos above.
If you are a beginner at rock tumbling, this is a great tumbling rough for you because no special skills or equipment are needed to produce great results. We believe that if you carefully follow our tumbling instructions at the link below, using quality grit and polish, you will be able to make some nice tumbled stones. Happy Tumbling !
