Rock Tumbling and Lapidary Supplies
Rock Tumbler Grit - Lapidary Abrasives
Rock tumbling "grit" is a silicon carbide powder with a Mohs hardness of 9.25. That is much harder than the types of rocks that are commonly tumbled. Coarse grit is used to shape the rocks, then progressively finer grits are used to smooth their surface and prepare them for polishing.
Rock Tumbling and Lapidary Polish
Most people who have been tumbling for a while have a favorite polish and use it for most of their work. Others experiment with different polishes, looking for a polish that will produce the highest possible luster on a stubborn material. We use TXP aluminum oxide polish for almost all of our tumble polishing.
Tumbler Rough Rocks for Tumbling
"Tumbler rough" is the name used for rock that is suitable for use in a rock tumbler. Agate, jasper, quartz and many other rocks can be used in a tumbler to produce tumbled stones. We offer several types of rough that are sized for the beginner (marked with an "E" for "Easy") to produce great tumbled stones.
Tumbling Media
Rock tumbling media can significantly improve the results of your tumbling. Tumbling media has three basic functions: 1) Deliver grit to hard-to-reach rock surfaces; 2) A filler when tumbling a partial load of rock; 3) To cushion fragile rock materials during the tumbling process.
