Coral is an organism that lives in warm, shallow parts of the ocean. It builds a calcareous "skeleton" that is often preserved as a fossil. Sometimes the calcarious skeleton is replaced with a microcrystalline quartz known as "agate". When this occurs the material is known as "agatized coral" or "agatized fossil coral".
These fossils often preserve the tublular cavities occupied by the coral polyps. These can be seen in the rock as linear features (lateral-sections through the coral cavity) or as floral features (cross-sections through the coral cavity).
For sale are beautifully polished Agatized Coral gemstones. These tumbled stones are sold in 4 ounce
(113 gram), 8 ounce (226 gram) and one pound (453 gram) bags. Your stones will be similar in size, shape and color to
the stones pictured above. They are perfect for a variety of jewelry and craft projects - or simply to admire.
This agatized coral contains some voids so some rough spots on the tumbled stones should be expected. However, it is an interesting material and anyone interested in fossils will likely enjoy studying the patterns and preservation in these tumbled stones.
