Bloodstone Rough

Bloodstone is the name given to a translucent to opaque jasper with a green color and spashes of red that resemble drops of blood. This variety of jasper has been popular for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks called it "heliotrope". It's popularity continues today.

The bloodstone for sale here ranges medium green to dark green in color and from 1/2" to 2" in diameter. Some pieces have a significant amount of yellow, pink and white varigation. The drops of blood range from small scattered specks to large dense blotches. Photographed wet to show full color.

Bloodstone is a hard, tough and durable chalcedonly. It tumbles best with other chalcedonly materials such as jasper and agate. We strongly recommend this material for beginners because it easily takes a nice polish.

As a semi-precious stone, bloodstone has a long history. It has been used in men's rings for thousands of years and was a commonly carved as a ring stone for use in "sealing" documents. Today bloodstone cabochons are still popular for men's rings and cufflinks. It is also a very popular stone for women's beaded bracelets and necklaces.
