Sunstone is a name given to feldspar specimens that display a reddish "adularescence" (reflections of light
from planes of tiny mineral inclusions when a stone is turned in the light). These Sunstone specimens are tumbled pieces of
an igneous rock composed of numerous feldspar crystals (and other minerals) in different optical orientations.
When you turn the specimens in the light you will see a few small reddish flashes from multiple orientations.
A few of these small reflections are visible in the photograph above.
For sale are beautifully polished sunstone gemstones. These tumbled stones are sold in 4 ounce (113 gram),

More information about Sunstone
Sunstone is a gemstone that is seldom seen in jewelry and other ornamental objects. Translucent
specimens are used to make tumbled stones, cut into beads or fashioned into cabochons. These
are used in necklaces, pendants and earrings. Transparent single-crystal specimens are
sometimes used to make faceted stones.
As a feldspar, sunstone has cleavage planes that often separate if the stone suffers an impact. This makes
Sunstone an unsuitable material for rings or other jewelry items that can be exposed to impact.
The name "Sunstone" has been used in a variety of ways. Some people reserve its use to specimens of
oligoclase feldspar with red adularescence. Others use the name for any feldspar with adularescence.
Moonstone is a feldspar that displays a bluish adularescence.
