Ocean Jasper or Sea Jasper is a name given to a gem material produced along the shoreline of Madagascar. It receives the
name "ocean jasper" from that locality. It usually has a round concentric "eye" pattern or a round poppy
flower pattern. It occurs in a wide variety of colors but green, red, yellow, brown, white and orange are most common.
In some specimens the jasper grades into translucent bands of agate.
For sale are beautifully tumble-polished ocean jasper gemstones. These tumbled stones are sold in 4 ounce (113 gram), 8 ounce
(226 gram) and one pound (453 gram) bags. Your stones will be similar in size, shape and color to the stones pictured above. They are perfect
for a variety of jewelry and craft projects - or simply to admire.
More information about Ocean Jasper:
Ocean jasper is a very popular lapidary material. It is often cut into "designer" cabochons that display spectacular and colorful
"eye" patterns. These are popular as pendants and earrings. It is also often cut into beads of various sizes.
Ocean Jasper has been found in a limited area on the coast of Madagascar. The beach hosting the deposit has
nearly been mined out and most of the remaining known resource is below the water line. It is unlikely that
dredging or mining it underwater will be economical. Future supplies of Ocean Jasper could be limited.
