Labradorite is a variety of plagioclase feldspar that is widely known for its play of colors. When the mineral is moved under incident light it produces flashes of iridescent blue, green, yellow or orange. This optical effect is known as "labradoresence" and is caused when planes within the mineral reflect specific colors of light.
Labradoresence can be seen in some of the stones in the image above. If these stones were in front of you and you moved the light source other stones would have the proper angle of incidence to display the iridescent flash. That could also occur by moving your head or moving the stones.
Most of these stones display labradoresence if viewed with the proper angle between stone, light source and observer.
For sale are beautifully polished Labradorite gemstones. These tumbled stones are sold in 4 ounce
(113 gram), 8 ounce (226 gram) and one pound (453 gram) bags. Your stones will be similar in size, shape and color to
the stones pictured above. They are perfect for a variety of jewelry and craft projects - or simply to admire.
Other Uses of Labradorite
Labradorite is commonly used in jewelry with beads, earrings and pendants being especially popular. Slabs of polished labradorite are also used as an architectural stone to cover interior and exterior surfaces. When a person walks past a surface covered with labradorite they see it produce repeated flashes as their eye perceives light reflecting from different parts of the surface.
