Treasure Bags! Velour pouches for storing
stones or giving them as gifts. | |
Our tumbled hematite gemstones have a mirror-bright silver-metallic luster that beautifully reflects the light. Hematite is an ore of iron and you will immediately sense a weighty feel when you pick-up one of
these tumbles. They feel heavy because hematite has a density that is about twice that of most
other gemstones.
These tumbled stones are sold in 1/4 pound, 1/2 pound and one pound bags. The picture above
shows the contents representative of a 1/4 pound bag. Your stones will be similar in size, shape
and color to the stones pictured above. They are perfect for a variety of jewelry and craft
projects - or simply to admire.
Hematite is a very popular jewelry stone and is often used in men's rings and cufflinks. Hematite carvings and beads are also very popular.
Its bright finish and silver color make it popular in women's jewelry - especially beaded bracelets. One property that limits the use of hematite is its weight. A string of hematite beads will
be very heavy and hematite stones in earrings are a bit too weighty for the comfort of some people.
The name "hematite" is derived from the Greek word for blood because many specimens of hematite are a bright
red color. The people of some historic cultures believed that possession of hematite would bring
them good fortune in lawsuits, protect them in battle and bring favorable decisions from people in power. Before the invention
of plate glass, pieces of reflective hematite were often used as mirrors. Although hematite jewelry
was most popular during Victorian times it is currently seeing a resurgence.
Warning: Polished stones can be a choking hazard for small children. |
